The time has come to say goodbye to plastic shopping bags and single use plastics, to address the many environmental problems associated with plastic items in our environment.
The NSW government has introduced a single use plastics bag ban for June and other single use plastics items being banned later this year.
The first phase of the ban comes into effect on the 1 June 2022 with a ban on the supply of lightweight shopping bags.
Since 2017, UOW and UOW Pulse have discarded single use plastic bags and transitioned to alternatives in their retail spaces. In the lead up to the 1 June, UOW Pulse are working with retail tenants to support their transition away from single use plastics.
Students are encouraged to support the ban on campus and in the community and BYO reusable bags when out and about.
The second phase of the ban comes into effect on the 1 November 2022 with a ban on single use plastic straws, cutlery and stirrers, single use plastic plates and bowls and also expanded polystyrene food ware. UOW and UOW Pulse are working to prepare for this ban across all areas of its operations.
More information will be provided on how students can support this transition later in the year.
