This resource will provide an overview of Office365 and the programs included in the suite.
What is Office365?
Office365 refers to a subscription plan that includes access to Microsoft Office applications and other productivity services that are enabled over the Internet. When using these applications, all content is automatically saved to your OneDrive, and you can access this content anywhere with an Internet connection by logging into your UOWmail account using an Internet browser.
Accessing Office365
The University of Wollongong provides access to this online suite for free. You can also install Office365 (including Microsoft Office programs) for free on your personal computer – see here.
You can access Office365 online through your UOWmail account. When you are logged into your account, you will see a grid-like icon know as the ‘App Launcher’ in the top left-hand corner (see below).
When you click on the App Launcher icon, all your applications will appear as in the image below. You can then select the application you would like to use.
Applications

The Mail application is the home of your UOWmail account. You can customize the look of your inbox and messages, control how messages are processed and stored, and create rules to manage incoming mail. A UOW student is provided with 25GB of email and calendar storage with attachment sizes up to 25MB. To learn more, check out our ‘UOWmail’ resource. |
Calendar |
The Calendar application can be used to create and track appointments and meetings. You can create multiple calendars, link to other people’s calendars, and share your calendar with others. |
People |
The People application allows you to manage your personal contacts and view any address books that have been set up for your UOWmail. You can add a contact or group manually by selecting the ‘New’ button. It also provides you the option of connecting to social networks such as LinkedIn. |
Tasks |
Tasks is a useful application for time-management in that it allows you to keep track of things that you need to do but don’t necessarily want to put on your calendar. This feature can sync with your phone tasks application, depending on the model type. |
Newsfeed |
Newsfeed allows you to post a comment in the SharePoint Newsfeed to start a conversation with everyone using UOWmail or just a small group of people. The Newsfeed application is not widely used at the university. |
OneDrive |
OneDrive is a cloud-storage application that allows you to store, sync, share and easily collaborate on files securely. This application allows you to save files, which can then be accessed at any computer when you log into your UOWmail account. OneDrive provides UOW students with 5GB storage. |
SharePoint |
SharePoint Online allows you to create or follow other SharePoint Online sites to help you organise information, people and projects. SharePoint Online is not accessible to students. |
Word |
Word Online lets you create, edit and share Word documents in your web browser. You can access your documents from any device and work collaboratively with other people who have a UOWmail account. These documents can also be downloaded if you wish to work on the document offline using Microsoft Word. Word Online looks and functions in the same way as a Microsoft Word document that is offline; however, the only difference is that the document is automatically saved to your OneDrive. |
Excel |
Excel Online lets you create, edit and share Excel workbooks in your web browser. You can access workbooks from any device and work collaboratively with other people who have a UOWmail account. These spreadsheets can also be downloaded if you wish to work on the spreadsheet offline. Excel Online looks and functions in the same way as a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet that is offline; however, the only difference is that the spreadsheet is automatically saved to your OneDrive. |
PowerPoint |
PowerPoint Online lets you create, edit and share PowerPoint presentations in your web browser. You can access and deliver presentations from any device, and work with other people who have a UOWmail account at the same time. These presentations can also be downloaded if you wish to work on the presentation offline. PowerPoint Online looks and functions in the same way as a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation that is offline; however, the only difference is that the presentation is automatically saved to your OneDrive. |
OneNote |
OneNote Online lets you create, edit and share OneNote notebooks in your web browser. You can access notebooks from any device, take notes, track to-do items, and work with other people at the same time. |
Other applications
Delve |
Delve Online helps you discover information that is likely to be most interesting or important from across Office365, by retrieving it from your email account, OneDrive and other applications in the suite. Delve is not widely used by the university. |
Video |
The Video application allows you to watch, upload and share videos within the community that uses the Office365 Video application. If you would like to share the video with external users they will need to be provided with a link. The Video application is not widely used by the university. |
Sway |
Sway is a presentation application that is an alternative to PowerPoint. It allows you to use content from a variety of sources such as videos, tweets and audio with minimal effort and use the built-in layout engine to craft a cohesive look and feel that looks great on any screen. |
Yammer |
Yammer is a private social network that helps you and your company or group project members stay on top of tasks. Yammer is not widely used by the university. |
Planner |
Planner lets you easily build teams, share goals, and track progress to get work done together anywhere, on any device. Planner is not widely used by the university. |
Forms |
Forms lets you create surveys, registrations, quizzes and more. Once you have created the survey or quiz, it can be sent to other students who can participate in answering the questions. These answers can then be collated in an Excel spreadsheet with details such as: start date, submit date, responder email, responder name, and the answers. |
PowerApps |
PowerApps is a collection of software services and apps that can be used to create custom business applications. PowerApps is not widely used by the university. |
Flow |
Flow is an application that can be used to connect different applications together and automate certain actions to better manage workflow. Flow is not widely used by the university. |
Dynamics 365 |
Dynamics 365 is a business application that can be connected with different applications and used to monitor and analyse different components of a business. Dynamics 365 is not widely used by the university. |
Teams |
Teams allows you to create and manage groups of people from within your organisation, and create discussion threads to promote online communication between members of your team. Teams is not widely used by the university. |
Stream |
Stream is a video content management application that allows you to upload, categorise and share your own videos, as well as watch videos online. Stream is not widely used by the university. |
