Ecological Research Centre (ERC) Volunteer

Activity overview

How is the program run?

This program is paused for 2024.

What will I do?

Student volunteers will assist with the husbandry of native captive animals and the cleaning and maintenance of marine tank systems or freshwater tank systems at the ERC. They will have the opportunity to develop practical skills in native animal health and husbandry, marine science and aquatic system maintenance that would be useful should they choose to pursue honours or PhD projects in these areas, or in related jobs in government or the private sector. There may also be the possibility of volunteer work assisting current research students with their projects. Volunteers will work with vertebrate or invertebrate animals in the marine room, freshwater room, or animal holding rooms at the ERC potentially once per week and have the opportunity to talk to current research students and staff about their projects.

How will I benefit?

Students benefit by developing skills that would be useful in a workplace dealing with captive animals and marine or freshwater aquatic systems. Students who are interested in honours or PhD research in wildlife ecology, marine or aquatic science and conservation will gain a head start through this program as they will have the opportunity to develop the skills needed to maintain their own experiments. Students wishing to pursue related jobs in government or the private sector will also broaden their skill set to include practical animal husbandry and handling and/or marine and aquatic system maintenance and functioning.

How do I apply?

Expressions of interest from potential volunteers will be sought on an as-needed basis through research group contacts and faculty email lists.

Are there any special requirements for this role?

Willingness to work with animals and/or marine or freshwater tank systems and to perform repetitive cleaning tasks. Some heavy lifting may be involved.
