How is this program run?

What will I do?

Students will take an active role in the Student Life @ UOW Steering Group each scheduled meeting, responsible to represent the wider student community as the peak group where operational priorities and plans are confirmed to act on.

This group is an important vehicle for UOW meeting its 2025 strategic goal of meeting 80% student satisfaction on the national SES results.

Each student member is an important representative of UOW's Student Life Steering Group. The SLSG is uniquely co-Chaired by a leading student member and the Director, Student Life Division, Theresa Hoynes.

Student members of this group are expected to contribute significantly to meeting discussions with their feedback, ideas and partnership with staff for setting the direction for achieving uplift and improvement.

How will I benefit?

Students will have exposure to several unique and significant learning experiences by participating in this group:

• Advanced representation skills - how to represent the needs of student groups within complex operating systems, positive activism, and negotiation with others
• Advanced communication skills - confidently and productively voicing needs of those they represent, establishing positive relationships with others in the group, positive arguments/analysis, and compromise
• Collaborative teamwork and partnership - joining with group peers to plan and execute all deliverables across the year to achieve group outcomes, strong planning and organising skills, record keeping and reporting skills
• Strategic planning - digesting volumes of complex and sensitive information, evaluating, discussing within the context of institutional strategic goals, active decision making.

How do I apply?

New expressions of interest can be made at any time across the year. A wide advertising campaign for new members will happen in September. Students are expected to follow the EOI instructions detailed in that campaign.

Are there any special requirements for this role?

Co-Chair role must have sat on SAC for over 12 months and be a current member. Additional 1 SLSC member must also actively sit on SAC. Other students must represent known segments of the wider student population e.g. UG, PG, HDR, First Year, Rural and Regional, Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, International, first in family, mature-age, disability, other campus.

Minimum requirements for UOWx recognition

To receive UOWx Recognition, you must complete the following:

• An "engaged" student will need to complete a minimum 20 hours in a calendar year
• A "highly engaged" student will need to complete 35 hours in a calendar year
