French is one of the two working languages of the United Nations and many other organisations actively engaged in international politics and welfare (such as the Red Cross, the Olympic Games and the European Union {EU}). As a language spoken on all five continents, it continues to play an important part in the arts, politics and daily lives of millions of people throughout the world. In the course of your French major, you will study language, grammar, culture and history.
You can begin your study of French from scratch or, if you have previously studied the language, from intermediate level. You will become proficient in all four communicative skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing. France has a fascinating history and culture. Core subjects will teach you to apply your French in a variety of social situations while introducing you to French history, culture and society, including Francophone cultures outside of France. You will discover the rich tapestry of historical events and socio-cultural forces that have shaped modern France and the French-speaking world.
