Overview

The hospitality industry forms a key part of the economy across the globe. From entertainment and recreation to accommodation and food service, it is a highly diverse industry that requires flexible, responsive managers to successfully guide businesses.

This major provides the practical, vocational workplace skills combined with the theoretical knowledge necessary to operate in a business context. You will be involved in projects such as corporate events, industry visits, film festivals, outdoor sporting events and concerts. You could move into roles such as food and beverage manager, front of house manager, restaurant manager, bar and gaming manager.

You will develop skills to analyse, design and execute judgement using a wide range of technical, creative, conceptual and managerial competencies. Subjects include bar operations, food and beverage, managing finances, customer service, human resource management and business planning. Work will be done in various hospitality and tourism settings like restaurants, hotels, catering operations, clubs, nightclubs and cafes.

This qualification provides a pathway to work in events in a range of industries including tourism and travel, hospitality, sport, cultural, and community sectors. After graduating with a Bachelor of Business and a TAFE Advanced Diploma of Event Management, you could work in event management companies, event venues or organisations that run their own events.

The first year and a half of the degree is a combination of TAFE and University study while the last half of the degree is University only. Within the Bachelor of Business component of the degree, you can major in human resource management, management, marketing or public relations to complement your TAFE Advanced Diploma of Hospitality Management.

You will also undertake a final-year capstone subject that lets you apply everything you've learned up to that point in collaboration with students from other disciplines. Plus, you have the option of applying for an internship to gain valuable experience whilst receiving credit towards your degree.

See the course handbook for more information.

Human Resource Management (major)

Human resource management (HRM) is a critical component of business, recognising people as an organisation's most valuable resource. This program goes beyond the traditional approach of finding and employing staff, extending into the realm of nurturing, and retaining talent to optimise performance. Specific focus is placed on the acquisition and development of employees, positively influencing their employment performance, and monitoring and managing the processes of staff selection, retention and turnover. HRM examines specific people management practices such as recruitment and selection, remuneration and performance management, employee relations, management of change, learning and development and workplace health and safety management.

The final-year capstone subject allows you to apply everything you have learned in collaboration with students from other disciplines.

  • Higher Education Study

For your application to be assessed on your university results you need to have completed at least half a year of full-time study (or part-time equivalent) at a Bachelor's degree level or higher. Your grades will be converted to a selection rank to be used for admission purposes. Students may also be eligible for credit for prior learning.

  • Work and life experience

Admission to UOW is primarily based on your academic qualifications, with work or life experience generally not considered. If you do not meet the academic requirements for this course, we recommend exploring recognized pathway programs, such as those offered by UOW College or the TAFE Tertiary Preparation Certificate (TPC).

For more information, please refer to the UOW Admissions Information page.

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people

UOW's Woolyungah Indigenous Centre's Indigenous Admissions Program (IAP) offers an alternative pathway for Indigenous Australians aged 17 and over who are seeking entry into an undergraduate course at UOW. Upon completing the IAP, applicants will be considered for admission based on an interview and assessment of both academic and non-academic qualities. For further details, including the application process, please contact Woolyungah Indigenous Centre.

  • Domestic applicants with overseas qualifications

If you have completed or partially completed studies at an approved university or tertiary institution, you may be eligible for entry to UOW. For more information, contact the UOW Future Students Team.

Accepted international test results include IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, Cambridge, and OET for specific health-related courses.

Alternatively, you can fulfill the requirement by completing an English course at UOW College.

  • Workload
    Full-Time Study Load

As a full-time student, you can expect to commit around 48 hours of study per week. This includes class time and independent study. You may need to factor more time for examination study and practical work & placements.

    Part-Time Study Load

For part-time students, study hours will vary based on the number of units taken, with similar expectations for class and independent study.

For more details on course workloads, please refer to the UOW Handbook.

  • Credit for Prior Learning

If you have completed prior studies or relevant professional experience, you can request course credit or subject exemptions to reduce the duration and cost of your program.

Credit for prior learning evaluates your previous study or work experience related to your chosen subjects.

UOW values lifelong learning and recognizes various types of prior learning, regardless of how or where it was obtained. For more information, refer to UOW's Credit for Prior Learning page.
