Overview

Exercise scientists apply the science of exercise to improve human health, fitness and performance. They design, implement and evaluate exercise and physical activity programs for a wide range of people within the community. These professionals provide programs for improving general health, the prevention of chronic diseases and injury, and enhanced sports performance.

The Bachelor of Exercise Science will prepare you for a career in sporting organisations, education, community and corporate health units, and gymnasiums.

Throughout this degree, you will study anatomy, physiology, exercise physiology, exercise prescription, nutrition, psychology, neuromechanics, and biomechanics. These core subjects are designed to deepen your understanding of how exercise affects the body, and how to use evidence-based practices and a person centred approach to prescribe exercise safely and effectively. This knowledge is aimed at improving fitness, performance and health outcomes and the quality of life of those you will serve.

A key element of this degree is the practical experience component. This involves 140 hours of placement in a community, sporting, scientific, or commercial exercise setting and is necessary for you to graduate and become an accredited exercise scientist. This hands-on experience is crucial, as it allows you to apply what you've learned in real-world scenarios, ensuring you are prepared for professional practice upon graduation.

See the course handbook for more information.

Taught by leading researchers, these classes will give you the knowledge and skills to meet the needs of tomorrow’s employers and tackle real-world challenges.

This degree is designed to meet the prerequisite requirements for admission into the Master of Clinical Exercise Physiology.

It is highly recommended that all graduates apply for accreditation with ESSA within 2 years of completing their degree. This is of particular importance for international students to ensure that they meet the ESSA English Language requirements. For more information see ESSA Accreditation site.

Admissions information

A range of admission options are available for future students. The procedures governing admission are defined in UOW's Admissions Procedures, and the UOW College Admissions Policy.

For specific advice or to ask any questions regarding an application, please contact the UOW Future Students Team.

Applicants need to have achieved the required score in a qualification equivalent to the completion of 13 years of schooling in Australia.

In order to succeed in your chosen course, it is assumed you have completed relevant subjects in your senior high school studies or other relevant qualifications. This is particularly important for degrees with a strong basis in Mathematics or Science.

Compulsory Work Based Placement
