If you’re planning to study at UOW immediately after finishing your HSC, International Baccalaureate (IB), or an interstate equivalent, you can apply for Early Admission to this course. Applications can be submitted via the UOW Early Admission website during the designated period, usually June – August each year.

Students can also apply through the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC).

If you’re a non-school leaver (e.g., completed Year 12 previously and/or have a TAFE qualification or equivalent), you can apply directly to UOW.

Overview

The Bachelor of Research degree comprises research training and coursework, requiring students to complete 48 credit points of subjects. Academic Units may award credit for up to 24 credit points of the degree.

Students completing the Bachelor of Research will receive 48 points of credit and be able to enrol in the 2nd year of the Master of Research and undertake the 48 credit points thesis.

Mechanical Engineering (major)

Mechanical engineers design, build, test and maintain all kinds of machines from robots to cars to space vehicles. They are continually designing, building and testing new forms of environmentally safe and sustainable technologies such as solar energy, solar vehicles, and wave and wind energy. You can select electives from a number of specialist areas in your final year including sustainable energy and engineering systems, intelligent manufacturing, applied mechanics, robotics, automotive and bulk materials handling, and engineering management. Your degree includes 12-week hands-on industry experience either in Australia or overseas with financial support opportunities, as well as a range of industry projects and other career-ready learning opportunities. Accreditation & professional recognition

UOW's engineering programs are accredited by Engineers Australia and relevant world engineering bodies through the Washington Accord. This ensures recognition by equivalent professional engineering bodies in the USA, UK, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa, Ireland, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore and other countries.

This recognition ensures that graduates from this course are admitted, on application, to the grade of Graduate Membership of Engineers Australia.

Entry Requirements
Additional information

Applicants must have a bachelor’s or master’s coursework degree from a recognised tertiary institution with a minimum credit average (65% or a GPA of 3.0 out of 4.0).

All applicants for the Bachelor of Research must apply for the Master of Research via the online application system and submit a written (preferably typed) proposal as part of their application. The proposal should:

Contain, in no more than one page, a clear description of the discipline area or project topic you wish to study or undertake for the Master of Research 48cp thesis; and
Conclude with a statement of your motivation for undertaking the research course.

Applicants will be assessed on academic results and relevant experience by the Head of Postgraduate Studies. If successful, a packaged offer will be awarded for the Bachelor of Research/Master of Research. Candidates will undertake the Bachelor of Research in the first year of study, and if this degree is completed successfully, they can progress to the thesis component (second year of study) of the Master of Research.

Note that candidates may complete the Bachelor of Research only and are under no obligation to proceed to the Master of Research.

Work and life experience
Admission to UOW is primarily based on your academic qualifications, with work or life experience generally not considered. If you do not meet the academic requirements for this course, we recommend exploring recognized pathway programs, such as those offered by UOW College or the TAFE Tertiary Preparation Certificate (TPC).

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
UOW's Woolyungah Indigenous Centre's Indigenous Admissions Program (IAP) offers an alternative pathway for Indigenous Australians aged 17 and over who are seeking entry into an undergraduate course at UOW. Upon completing the IAP, applicants will be considered for admission based on an interview and assessment of both academic and non-academic qualities. Domestic applicants with overseas qualifications
If you have completed or partially completed studies at an approved university or tertiary institution, you may be eligible for entry to UOW. You'll need to provide academic records, and your course must be at least one-sixth complete. Non-English documents must include an official English translation. English language proficiency
All UOW courses are taught in English and require varying levels of proficiency. If English is not your first language, you must meet the University’s English Language Requirements, which differ by course.

Accepted international test results include IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, Cambridge, and OET for specific health-related courses.

Alternatively, you can fulfill the requirement by completing an English course at UOW College.
Workload
Full-Time Study Load

As a full-time student, you can expect to commit around 48 hours of study per week. This includes class time and independent study. You may need to factor more time for examination study and practical work & placements.

Part-Time Study Load

For part-time students, study hours will vary based on the number of units taken, with similar expectations for class and independent study.
