If you’re planning to study at UOW immediately after finishing your HSC, International Baccalaureate (IB), or an interstate equivalent, you can apply for Early Admission to this course. Applications can be submitted via the UOW Early Admission website during the designated period, usually June – August each year.

Students can also apply through the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC).

If you’re a non-school leaver (e.g., completed Year 12 previously and/or have a TAFE qualification or equivalent), you can apply directly to UOW.

Overview

Throughout the Bachelor of Science, you will undertake core science subjects then select a major to specialise in mathematics and physics.

All subjects include a major practical component to complement and reinforce what you learn in lectures, and ensure you gain hands-on skills that prepare you for real-world activities in your future careers. You will learn from academics that are internationally recognised in many fields of research.

Biomolecular Physics (major)

Majoring in biomolecular physics will allow you to develop knowledge to visualise and understand molecules and use that understanding to develop new treatments and therapies to combat disease.

You will study specialist subjects in molecules, cells and organisms, biochemistry, mechanics and thermodynamics, electromagnetism and optoelectronics, as well as quantum mechanics and nanoscale biology.

This major will equip you with the expertise to pursue a career as a biomolecular physicist, which can be integrated across a wide range of careers, including commercial biomedicine, instrumentation and biotech companies (e.g. Sigma and Life Technologies) as well as contributing to the development of molecular diagnostic instrumentation for government and institutional research laboratories. They can also assist beamline scientists at National Research Facilities (e.g. ANSTO and the Australian Synchrotron).

Molecular life sciences are at the forefront of scientific discovery, unlocking the innermost secrets of the cell and developing new ways to detect and attack disease. UOW's research institute Molecular Horizons houses two cryo-electron microscopes: the three-metre tall, one tonne Titan Krios the world's most powerful high-resolution electron microscope and the slightly smaller Talos Arctica.

Many physicists at UOW work under the aegis of the Institute for Superconducting and Electronic Materials (ISEM). ISEM is recognised as a flagship research strength of UOW. Students can undertake nanotechnology research projects for medical applications in third- and fourth-year level subjects.

  • Workload

    Full-Time Study Load

    As a full-time student, you can expect to commit around 48 hours of study per week. This includes class time and independent study. You may need to factor more time for examination study and practical work & placements.
