Overview

The Master of Applied Finance with a double specialisation in investing and financial technology is for students who are interested in focusing on modern technological developments in the financial sector.

This degree will allow you to integrate technical, theoretical and industry knowledge on the operation and organisation of, and participation in, local and international finance.

The investing specialisation focuses on investment and portfolio management, while the financial technology specialisation focuses on the impact of technology on the banking and the global payments systems, the insurance industry, and trading in financial markets.

Domestic students have the option to study on campus or via distance delivery mode. Distance refers to learning activities that do not require you to attend campus, but instead allow you to join pre-scheduled virtual classes.

Fee subsidised places available 

UOW is offering Commonwealth supported places (CSPs) for all of our postgraduate coursework degrees in 2025. This means the Australian government will subsidise your tuition fees by up to 75%. To be eligible for this fee subsidy, you must meet the following criteria: Be a domestic student, i.e. an Australian or New Zealand citizen, a permanent resident of Australia or a permanent Australian Humanitarian visa holder.

Investing and Financial Technology (research area)

The double specialisation in investing and financial technology is for students who are interested in acquiring an advanced understanding of investing, portfolio management and the impact of financial technology (FinTech) on banking and global payments systems. This degree will allow you to integrate technical, theoretical and industry knowledge on the operation and organisation of local and international finance, and the modern technological developments in the financial sector. Accreditation & professional recognition

The Master of Applied Finance (Double Specialisation) has been accepted into the CFA Institute University Affiliation Program. This status is granted to institutions whose degree program(s) incorporate at least 70% of the CFA Program Candidate Body of Knowledge (CBOK), which provide students with a solid grounding in the CBOK and positions them well to sit for the CFA exams. In addition, students are strongly recommended to complete the free online learning module, Ethics and Standards of Practice available through the CFA Institute.

A recognised bachelor’s degree in a Business, Engineering, Maths, or IT-related specialisation with an equivalent average mark of 50%,

A recognised master’s degree with an equivalent average mark of 50%,

Any Graduate Certificate or diploma in a finance-related field with an equivalent average mark of 50%,

Other tertiary qualifications combined with extensive professional work experience will be considered.
