Overview

There is currently a high demand for graduates in medicinal and pharmaceutical chemistry. Students acquire advanced training in various fields of medicinal chemistry and gain significant skills in the drug discovery and development processes. The degree brings together knowledge of chemistry and biology to understand the causes of disease towards the design, synthesis, characterisation and development of medicines to treat or cure the diseases.

Subjects introduce the basic elements of modern medicinal chemistry before delving into specialised training in drug discovery. This degree also integrates science communication and science management to prepare graduates for diverse career pathways.

Tutorials and laboratory-based practical work are offered where you can explore new technology developed in medicinal chemistry. Students will use laboratory instruments and computer modelling to develop therapeutics. This degree is designed through the lens of global perspectives in science where you will be exposed to emerging technologies such as the use of drones, Artificial Intelligence (AI), coding in science data collection and analysis, and the responsible conduct of research. The degree also integrates graduate work practice skills allowing you to translate your skills into career ready attributes.

Fee subsidised places available

UOW is offering Commonwealth supported places (CSPs) for all of our postgraduate coursework degrees in 2025. This means the Australian government will subsidise your tuition fees by up to 75%. To be eligible for this fee subsidy, you must meet the following criteria: Be a domestic student, i.e. an Australian or New Zealand citizen, a permanent resident of Australia or a permanent Australian Humanitarian visa holder.

Admissions information

A range of admission options are available for future students. The procedures governing admission are defined in UOW's Admissions Procedures, and the UOW College Admissions Policy.

A recognised Bachelor of Science degree with an equivalent average mark of 50% in chemistry or medicinal chemistry, including at least 24 credit points (or equivalent) of third-year chemistry, as well as at least second-year biology and biochemistry.

  • Workload

    Full-Time Study Load

    As a full-time student, you can expect to commit around 48 hours of study per week. This includes class time and independent study. You may need to factor more time for examination study and practical work & placements.

    If you have completed prior studies or relevant professional experience, you can request course credit or subject exemptions to reduce the duration and cost of your program.

    Credit for prior learning evaluates your previous study or work experience related to your chosen subjects.
