Overview

The Master of Occupational Health and Safety Extension provides students with an integrated teaching and research program, with the objective of promoting the highest level of safety, inspiring the next generation of professionals.

This extension degree provides you with an opportunity to focus on health promotion or occupational health and safety (OH&S) research, enabling you to address complex workplace OH&S issues through specialised technical knowledge and application.

During this degree you will study advanced WHS risk management, workplace hazards and hygiene, occupational health and safety systems, applied human factors and ergonomics, industrial epidemiology and toxicology, work health and safety law, industrial epidemiology and toxicology, health research methods.

In the final year of the degree, you will apply your knowledge and skills to a research-based capstone workplace project, providing a high level of evidence-based professional practice in occupational health and safety.

This degree has a flexible delivery mode combining online course content with three to five days of on campus block teaching sessions focused on the exploration and application of the subject material. The on campus component utilises a range of campus resources, including UOW’s well-resourced OH&S laboratory.

Fee subsidised places available

UOW is offering Commonwealth supported places (CSPs) for all of our postgraduate coursework degrees in 2025. This means the Australian government will subsidise your tuition fees by up to 75%. To be eligible for this fee subsidy, you must meet the following criteria: Be a domestic student, i.e. an Australian or New Zealand citizen, a permanent resident of Australia or a permanent Australian Humanitarian visa holder.

Health Promotion (specialisation)

Within the Health Promotion specialisation, you will gain the knowledge and skills to plan, implement, and evaluate health promotion programs efficiently, effectively, and appropriately to improve the health and wellbeing of populations. Areas of study will include Project Planning and Evaluation, Public Health Communication, Food and Health and The Future of Food Advanced.

The Master of Occupational Health and Safety is accredited by the Australian Occupational Health & Safety Education Accreditation Board (AOHSEAB)and the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH).

A recognised bachelor’s degree with an equivalent average mark of 50,
OR
A Master of Occupational Health and Safety with an equivalent average mark of 50,
OR
A Graduate Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety with an equivalent average mark of 50,
OR
Either a Graduate Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety or a Graduate Certificate in Occupational Hygiene with an equivalent average mark of at least 65.

Applicants with other relevant qualifications and/or work experience may also be considered.
