Overview

The Master of Occupational Health and Safety provides students with an integrated teaching and research program, with the objective of promoting the highest level of safety and inspiring the next generation of Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) professionals.

The knowledge and skills developed throughout this course will allow you to confidently address complex workplace occupational health and safety issues through technical knowledge and application. This degree also has an emphasis on communication skills and techniques essential to effectively implement OH&S strategies.

This degree has been developed in conjunction with industry to address the complex nature of occupational health and safety in the workplace.

During the Master of Occupational Health and Safety, you will study advanced WHS risk management, applied human factors and ergonomics, industrial epidemiology and toxicology, occupational health and safety systems, work health and safety law, workplace hazards and hygiene, human and organisational performance.

In the final stage of the degree, you will apply your knowledge and skills to a research-based capstone workplace project. This will give you a high level of evidence-based professional practice in occupational health and safety and allow application of those principles in a workplace setting.

The Master of Occupational Health and Safety has a flexible delivery mode combining online course content with three to five days of on campus block-teaching sessions focused on the exploration and application of the subject material. The on campus component utilises a range of campus resources, including UOW’s well-resourced OH&S laboratory.

Fee subsidised places available

UOW is offering Commonwealth supported places (CSPs) for all of our postgraduate coursework degrees in 2025. This means the Australian government will subsidise your tuition fees by up to 75%. To be eligible for this fee subsidy, you must meet the following criteria: Be a domestic student, i.e. an Australian or New Zealand citizen, a permanent resident of Australia or a permanent Australian Humanitarian visa holder.

The Master of Occupational Health and Safety is accredited by the Australian Occupational Health & Safety Education Accreditation Board (AOHSEAB)and the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH).

A recognised bachelor’s degree with an equivalent average mark of 50%,
OR
A Graduate Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety with an equivalent average mark of 50%,
OR
Either a Graduate Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety or a Graduate Certificate in Occupational Hygiene with an equivalent average mark of at least 65%.

Applicants with other relevant qualifications and/or work experience may also be considered.

  • Workload

    Full-Time Study Load

    As a full-time student, you can expect to commit around 48 hours of study per week. This includes class time and independent study. You may need to factor more time for examination study and practical work & placements.

  • Credit for Prior Learning

    All subjects successfully completed in the Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma will count as credit towards the Master of Occupational Health and Safety.

    If you have completed prior studies or relevant professional experience, you can request course credit or subject exemptions to reduce the duration and cost of your program.

    Credit for prior learning evaluates your previous study or work experience related to your chosen subjects.
