Overview

The Master of Occupational Hygiene uses science and engineering to measure exposure to physical, chemical and biological workplace hazards, communicating these to employers and employees to promote improved working conditions and practices.

Using science and engineering you will design and implement appropriate control strategies to prevent ill health caused by the working environment.

This degree has a flexible delivery mode combining online course content with three to five days of on campus block-teaching sessions focused on the exploration and application of the subject material. The on campus component utilises a range of campus resources, including UOW’s well-resourced occupational health and safety laboratory.

In the final stage of the degree, you will apply your knowledge and skills to a research-based capstone workplace project.

Fee subsidised places available

UOW is offering Commonwealth supported places (CSPs) for all of our postgraduate coursework degrees in 2025. This means the Australian government will subsidise your tuition fees by up to 75%. To be eligible for this fee subsidy, you must meet the following criteria: Be a domestic student, i.e. an Australian or New Zealand citizen, a permanent resident of Australia or a permanent Australian Humanitarian visa holder.

The Master of Occupational Hygiene is accredited by the following:

  • British Occupational Hygiene Society (BOHS):

The Master of Occupational Hygiene has been accredited by the British Occupational Hygiene Society (BOHS). Degree accreditation by BOHS recognises programmes that prepare graduates with the knowledge and skills required for good practice in the occupational hygiene profession. The accreditation criteria require the programme to meet specific learning outcomes. Degree accreditation by BOHS provides eligibility for Associate Membership of the Faculty of Occupational Hygiene and following a qualifying period of professional experience, provides access to the pathways to Licentiate or Chartered Membership by entitling the graduate to certain exemptions. Students on BOHS accredited programmes are eligible to apply for free BOHS student membership. BOHS welcomes feedback from students on accredited programmes. Feedback can be emailed to qualifications@bohs.org

  • Australian Institute of Occupational Hygienists:

The Master of Occupational Hygiene has been accredited by the Australian Institute of Occupational Hygienists (AIOH) and graduating students meet the educational requirements for Full membership (with 5 years Professional experience). Students may join the AIOH as an Associate member free for the first year. Our face-to-face practical workshops in our state-of-the-art Laboratories are taught by practicing Certified Occupational Hygienists (COHs), with a staff to student ratio of 1:8. We provide a student-centred, hands-on approach to learning and a renowned community of practice.

A recognised bachelor’s degree with a major in a science or health-related discipline,
OR
A degree in another relevant area (for example, Engineering) that contains at least one year of science-based subjects with an equivalent average mark of 50%,
OR
A Graduate Certificate with an equivalent average mark of 65%.

Note: Applicants seeking admission based on other relevant qualifications and/or work experience will be considered by the Faculty on an individual basis.
