At UOW, we prepare you for careers that showcase your flexibility, creativity, teamwork and entrepreneurship.
If you are passionate about gaining practical experience, learning about real world issues and making a difference, then UOW is for you. We help you launch your design career through opportunities to work with real clients, on real problems. At the same time, we encourage you to explore your individual creativity, and use your design practice to respond to the world around you.
If you want to learn more about the social impact of how spaces are designed, or to understand which images work effectively in specific contexts, visual design is a good choice for you. Our degrees will help you strengthen your skills in managing visual elements in a wide range of contexts, informed by the principles of modern visual design.
The Visual Arts and Design major will focus on visual design in relation to your art practice. It infuses contemporary elements of design (composition, colour, space and written word) within traditional visual arts practice such as painting, drawing, sculpture and textiles.
Whichever option you choose, we will give you the right balance of doing and thinking. Our technical facilities and studio-based practice will encourage you to carve out your own creative niche. Our project focus will help you understand how visual designers communicate effectively with clients and imagine creative solutions for complex problems.

Ryan studied a double degree in Graphic Design and Advertising and Marketing at the University of Wollongong, where he was able to finesse his craft. However, more important than that, his time at UOW taught him to go out and seek the ideas in a brief, finding those moments of clarity – those lightbulb moments. He lives for those moments of pure inspiration. Ryan found his why at UOW.
My name is Ryan. I studied a double degree in Graphic Design and Advertising Marketing at University of Wollongong. My education at UOW gave me the practical skills to finesse my craft. They also taught me something more important to that and that's going out seeking the ideas and a brief. Finding that great idea and a brief is a moment of clarity. Something that you'll get hooked on once you have experienced it. It’s that classical lightbulb moment. I live for those moments of pure inspiration can solve the problem.
