At UOW we seek to acknowledge the service of Australians who have served the nation through membership of the Australian Defence Force through our Veterans Scholar Scheme.
UOW Veteran Scholar Scheme
About the scheme
Professor Sean Brawley, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Strategy and Planning) introduces the UOW Veteran Scholar Scheme.
Gday, I'm Professor Sean Brawley, and I'm Pro Vice-Chancellor (Strategy and Planning), here at the University of Wollongong.
Welcome to the UOW Veteran Scholars Scheme. Here at UOW, we seek to acknowledge the service of those Australians who have served the nation through membership of the Australian Defence Force.
The Veterans Scholars Scheme which we launch in April 2022, is one way we seek to recognise this service. At UOW, we define a veteran as a serving or ex-serving member of the Australian Defence Force, who has completed basic and initial employment training and has rendered at least one day continuous full-time service. This does include reservists.
We have launched the scheme with three new initiatives. The first acknowledges your training and experience when it comes to admission to one of our degrees. While the courses you undertook in the ADF can often be recognised when you apply for admission with a university degree, this is not always the case. If there is no direct translation, we will still give you a selection rank based on your rank and period of service. This selection rank is a figure out of 100. It works in the same way as the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank or ATAR. With your selection rank you will be able to apply for admission to a large range of courses for which you are qualified.
Many veterans have already completed a Bachelors degree. The second initiative relates to those veterans thinking about postgraduate study. For these courses, we will recognise your service by treating you like we treat the members of our UOW Alumni family. You will be eligible for a 10% discount on courses that attract full domestic fees.
The third initiative in the Veteran Scholars Scheme is not about you as a veteran, but it is an acknowledgment of the sacrifice made by your family. Spouses and dependents of veterans will be eligible for three adjustment points, which they can add to their ATAR to finalise their selection rank.
Please have a look around this landing page and learn more about the scheme, and what we offer. Don't hesitate to seek further information through the contact link provided. And keep coming back to this page as we share with you more details about the UOW Veteran Scholars Scheme.
We look forward to welcoming you to UOW. See you later.
UOW admission for veterans
The Veterans Scholar Scheme offers you the opportunity to apply for admission to UOW. We value your experience in the Australian Defence Force - not only does UOW accept many ADF training qualifications for assessment (where they are equivalent to a Certificate IV or higher) - we will also assess your service in the Australian Defence Force and convert this to a selection rank (similar to ATAR).
You can apply on the basis of your service through UAC or direct to UOW.
UAC: Apply through UAC and answer "Yes" to the question "Are you a current or former member of the Australian Defence Forces".
Applicants will need to enter their Defence Force rank under "Professional registration/qualifications" and their Defence Force experience under ‘Employment experience’, and provide a statement of service.
Direct: Apply directly to UOW online.
In Step 5 under "Employment details", applicants will need to enter their Defence Force rank and their years of service, and upload a copy of their statement of service.
The table below can be used as a guide to determining the admission selection rank your service history might be equivalent to. The Admissions team will conduct a full assessment of your qualification/s on receipt of a fully documented application.

ATAR adjustment factors for veteran dependents
UOW also acknowledges the sacrifices made by your family, and in recognition of the disruption to education that can ensue to service families, spouses and dependants of veterans will be eligible for three adjustment factors added to their ATAR to calculate their selection rank.
