UOW campus in India is in prime position for July launch

Opening as the second highest-ranked university in India

The University of Wollongong (UOW) will reinforce its reputation as one of the world’s most respected modern universities upon the opening of its campus in India in July 2024.

Ranked in the top 1 per cent of universities worldwide and equal 167th internationally*, UOW will open its campus as the second highest-ranked university in India. The commanding result is second only to the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay.

In May, UOW also achieved its best-ever result in the Times Higher Education (THE) Young University Rankings, ranking 2nd nationally and 16th globally. The rise in rankings reflects UOW’s commitment to academic excellence and research impact on a global scale.

Campus Director Nimay Kalyani is confident that UOW's standing will boost opportunities for local students.

“A world class leading university that ranks very high in any global ranking system is opening its doors in India,” Nimay says. “UOW's ranking places it in the same breath as the group of elite institutes of India known as the Institutes of National Importance. We are not here to compete with these institutes but to join them in creating more opportunities for students in India.”

Setting for future success

Situated within Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City), UOW will continue its renowned standards in education, pioneering research, and industry partnerships to the vibrant hub of talent and opportunity India presents.

“The initial offering of degrees at the UOW India campus are in the space of Computing and Financial Technologies,” Nimay says. “These align very well with the purpose the city was built for, and for the current and future occupants of the International Financial Services Centre (IFSC) Special Economic Zone (SEZ) within GIFT City.”

Graduates will be optimised for career success with the combination of UOW’s academic excellence and the professional opportunities of GIFT City, India’s first operational greenfield smart city and a future global centre of finance and technology.

Nimay is confident UOW's offering will create pathways to career success.

“Students will get world class education at a world class campus offering excellent experiences in and out of classrooms,” he says. “Leading global employers will be invited as experts in classrooms and as prospective employers on campus, and students will have access to a plethora of opportunities to learn and excel in what they choose as a career.

Continuing an established international relationship

UOW's campus in GIFT City, Gujarat, further strengthens the historical bond between two countries and the sister-state relationship between New South Wales and Gujarat.

A Letter of Intent was formally signed in July 2022 between UOW and Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City) to establish a location for teaching, research and industry engagement in GIFT City within a partnership or on a stand-alone basis.

As one of Australia’s leading teaching and research universities, UOW attracts significant numbers of Indian students to both the Wollongong campus and the University of Wollongong in Dubai (UOWD), forming the largest international cohort.
